Theodor Constantinescu was born into a family of musicians in Bucharest, Romania. His grandparents were concert pianists, his father cellist, pianist and composer.
For 8 years he trained in gymnastics and took piano lessons in Bucharest before moving to Montreal, Canada at age 12 where he entered the dance program at Ecole Supérieure de Danse du Québec associated with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens Company. His principal ballet teacher was Daniel Seillier from the Paris Opera. Meanwhile, he also studied with the National Ballet of Canada and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and later attended Vieux Montréal College.
Theodore Constantinescu's early roots as professional ballet artist began with "Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal" in Canada under the direction of Lawrence Rhodes. Eager to work with a wider variety of choreographers, the next twelve years he performed as soloist and principal dancer in Germany with National Ballet Companies in Düsseldorf – Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Berlin – Staatsoper Berlin, and Leipzig – Leipziger Ballet. He eventually adopted the stage name Theodore Constant. |
Theodore Constant also performs as guest artist with other Dance Companies and tours Russia, France, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Germany, Romania, Canada and Japan, as well as choreographing, coaching, and setting ballet productions. He holds teaching Diplomas from Germany and England and speaks fluently French, English, German and Romanian.
During his career he danced in over fifty different classical ballets, neo-classic and contemporary works in which roles were created for him. His repertoire includes soloist / principal roles in "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty", "The Nutcracker", "Don Quixote", "Giselle", "La Sylphyde", "Les Sylphydes", "Raymonda", "Carmen", "Faust", "Le Bal des Cadets", "La Fille mal Gardee", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Symphony in C", "Violin Concerto" - Balanchine, and other neo-classical and contemporary works.
He has worked with Maurice Béjart, Roland Petit, Heinz Spoerli, Uwe Scholz, Patricia Neary, William Forsythe, Lawrence Rhodes, Benjamin Harkarvy, Patrice Bart, Michael Denard, Hans van Manen and Egon Madsen among many others.
From 1998 on, Theodore Constant has been Ballet Master with numerous professional Dance Companies and Schools in Germany, France, Switzerland, Romania, U.S.A., Canada and Japan, including the Dresden Semperoper Ballet, John Cranko Academy Stuttgart, State Ballet School of Berlin - Germany, National Theatre – Romania, Basel Opera House Ballet – Switzerland, The Joffrey Ballet School, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Manhattan Youth Ballet – USA.
He serves as adjudicator at dance and choreography competitions in Europe and many of his pupils are now dancing with professional dance Companies in Europe, Canada and the United States.
Theodore Constant has worked as Artistic Adviser and Ballet Master with the National Theatre in Romania, Artistic Director, Ballet Master and Choreographer with the Cologne Dance Academy in Germany and the OSC Dance Company & School of Dance in Canada, and is presently with the Northern California Dance Conservatory in the United States since 2006. |
